How many people?
I am reading a book by Laura Spinney called Proto - How One Ancient Language Went Global. So very interesting.
In 2000 BCE there were somewhere between 27 to 35 million people inhabiting the earth. Now there are over 7 billion, 200 times that number. A family of four then represents 800 people now. It would seem that our technology has been created and evolved simply by the number of people that exist.
Yet our language and what we communicate amongst ourselves remains the same. We are challenged to describe exactly how we feel, what we think, what we see. We do so in a culture that is full of noise and busyness. Imagine what it would be like, in the solitude of those years so far behind us. What words would we use or even what words would we create or borrow from family, friends or visitors. Being with others would be the sole means for interaction. The outcome of coming together could create a single new word of what was discussed.
Now we use so many words and they always seem the same.
