Circumscribed Lives

In the book "Introduction to the Collected Poems of Bertolt Brecht" the authors state - ""Reading a poem we are alerted to and brought to acknowledge more ways of being human than we can encompass in our own circumscribed lives.""

We seem to shy away from reading poetry as it can be so many things that we aren't and it is hard to fathom the possible limitations. Yet there are lines that do alert us, that bring to light areas of our lives that may be hidden or forgotten. We often limit ourselves in the ways of our being.

Poetry opens doors, be it Bertolt Brecht, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, or Rudyard Kipling, they are always there to be opened.
